Fiber & Fleece General Information
Exhibit Entry – Irwin Building:
• Friday, August 4, 11 am – 7 pm
• Saturday, August 5, 11 am – 7 pm
Exhibit Pick Up:
• Tuesday, September 5, 1 pm – 6 pm (Irwin Bldg)
• Saturday, September 9, 1 pm – 6 pm (Hoskins Bldg)
Exhibitors may enter three items per class, but cannot place more than once per class. All entries must have been completed within the last year, appear new, and be clean. Soiled, smelly, or wet items will be disqualified. No “kit” projects allowed. All skeins of yarn should be a minimum 1 oz. or 100 yards approximately and the yarn needs to be tied in 3 places. No ribbon will be awarded without documentation.
Fiber & Fleece Documentation Forms are required for all entries and must be completed to enter your items. Please see above links to complete prior to entry. Forms will also be available on Entry Days.
Required info to complete forms:
- Personal entrant number (do not write name on form)
- Description of preparation, including techniques and tools used
- Dyeing process, if applicable, including type of dye
- Sample of original fiber, swatch or yarn, and list content, fiber
- Specify Alaskan fiber, if used
All divisions are open to all ages. If you are entering as a Junior, place the appropriate letter on the entry form under sub-category.
Sub-Categories:
A: Junior, ages 12 and under
B: Junior, 13 through 17
If sub-category is not specified, entry will be classified as OPEN.
Judging is on design, color, workmanship, finished appearance, difficulty of execution, and originality.

Enter a maximum of four fleeces per class. Fleeces must be no more than twelve months’ growth, as commonly measured by the wool trade. All wether fleeces in wether classes only. Enter each fleece in a clear plastic bag; one per bag. Do not include skirtings. Tag fleece with exhibitor name, breed and sex of fleece, division, and class number.
Definitions
Fine: Fine combing 64’s to 80’s
Medium Fine: Half-blood combing 60’s to 62’s
Medium: Blood combing 56 to 58’s & blood combing 50 to 54’s
Long: Low blood combing 46’s to 48’s; Common 40’s to 44’s; Braid, 36’s or coarser.
Natural colored: 30% or greater color content: solid white= 0%, solid black = 100%
Fleece Judging Information
Judging criteria:
- Quality or fineness typical of the breed
- Evenness of quality or fineness throughout the fleece
- Length and strength of staple
- Estimated clean weight
- Condition
- Character, including crimp and color
Fleeces will be penalized if they:
- Show paint or tar (except soluble branding fluids)
- Show excessive dung locks or tags
- Are discolored or clotted by excessive moisture
- Show a weak staple or break in fabric
- Contain excess burrs or other vegetable matter
