Main Office Receptionist

Garden Crew

Full-Time Seasonal Positions (hiring now)

Gardeners needed for the 2025 growing season at the Alaska State Fair. Candidates must be willing and capable of following instructions, able to work outdoors as part of a group, able to work with garden tools and able to be supervised. Work includes: soil preparation, planting, watering, fertilizing and mowing. Other duties as assigned. This is a physical labor job! Candidates must be physically able to perform the duties required, being able to routinely lift and carry 30 pounds, kneel and or be on their feet all day in all weather conditions. Available to work a 40 hour work week with occasional overtime as needed. Candidates must also possess a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. Must be 17 to apply.

Media Assistant – Fairtime position

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proven working experience in social media marketing or as a digital media specialist.
  • Excellent consulting, writing, editing (photo/video/text), presentation and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of social media – Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, , TikTok Instagram, Snapchat, blogs, etc.
  • Demonstrable social networking experience and social analytics tools knowledge.
  • Positive attitude, detail and customer orientated with good multitasking and organizational ability.
  • Ability to contribute individually, and participate in cross-functional tea

Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

  • Exceptional ability to learn, adapt, discover and test new ideas.
  • Strong communication skills with other team members.
  • Reply to comments, messages, etc. on social platforms as assigned.
  • Develop creative content spontaneously “on-the-go”.
  • Monitor the Fair social platform and alert tools for potential problems.
  • Generate, edit, publish and share daily content (original text, images or video) that builds meaningful connections and encourages community members to take action.
  • Optimize content within each platform to increase the visibility of sponsorship content.
  • Moderate all user-generated content in line with the moderation policy for each social media platform community.
  • Execute editorial calendars and syndication schedules.
  • Collaborate with Exhibits and Events departments to manage content while identifying key sponsors and coordinate actions with the Social Media Team.

Souvenir Seller

Fair-time position (application for souvenirs won’t be reviewed until end of June/July

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Merchandise selling skills.
  • Consistent cheerful public interaction skills under stressful conditions.
  • Must be able to stand for a five hour shift in semi-protected booth.
  • Must be able to make change.

Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

  • Sell souvenirs to public during Fair.
  • Cheerfully greet public and offer information as requested.
  • Maintain neat inventory, clean booth and help set up displays.
  • Operate cash register and credit card machine.

Exhibit Attendant

Purpose: Attendants are the main contact the general public has with personnel in the competitive exhibit program.  A courteous, informative attitude is essential.

Minimum Qualifications:  Must be able to speak English, must be at least 16 years old

Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

  • As a representative of the Alaska State Fair, attendants are to be polite, alert, and professional.
  • Attendants shall dress in a professional manner.
  • Attendants work 5 to 6 hour shifts for the 14 days of the fair.  Some attendants may be retained for cleaning or to assist on pick-up days.
  • Attendants are responsible for general cleaning of their assigned areas: including dusting, straightening pictures, picking up garbage, etc.
  • Attendants will make sure assigned area is secure.  Move barriers if necessary and make sure no one handles the exhibits.
  • If a problem arises notify the Exhibit Supervisor immediately.
  • Attendants are encouraged to carry a current daily schedule and answer questions from the public.  If you do not know an answer, do not offer an opinion.  Instead, try to find someone who may know the answer or direct them to an information booth.
  • Each shift contains a 20 minute break.  Exhibit Supervisor may approve days off if requested in a timely manner.

Herdsmen

Purpose: Herdsmen assist the Farm Exhibits Supervisor to keep livestock secure, clean and healthy. Herdsmen are often the main contact the general public has with personnel in Farm Exhibits. A courteous, informative attitude is essential.

Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

  • Be polite, alert, and professional at all times
  • Dress in a professional manner
  • Work approximately 6 to 8 hour shifts for the entire fair. 
  • Make sure assigned area is secure; watch the public to keep both fairgoers and animals safe.
  • Clean the barn and feed the animals on a schedule supplied by the Farm Exhibits Supervisor.  Keep the aisles and public areas clear of trash and animal debris.
  • Run errands for the Farm Exhibit Supervisor.
  • Encouraged to carry a current daily schedule and answer questions from the public.  If you do not know the answer, do not offer an opinion.  Instead, try to find someone who may know the answer or direct them to an information booth.
  • If a problem arises notify the Farm Exhibit Supervisor immediately.

Ticket Seller

Fair-time position

Minimum age 18.  Ability to process large amounts of tickets and money quickly and accurately.  Must be able to make change, process credit card sales, have excellent attention to detail, and provide courteous customer service under stressful conditions.  Must have prior cash handling experience; heavy cash handling experience preferred.

Grounds Crew

Full-time Seasonal position

Minimum age 18.  Ability to lift 75-100 lbs and willing to work in all weather conditions.  Must have a valid drivers license with acceptable driving record.  Duties include painting, carpentry projects, lawn mowing, weed whipping, fence line maintenance, and garbage pickup.

Horticulture/Maintenance Technician (garden crew)

Purpose:  The Horticulture/Maintenance Technician assists the Head Gardener to beautify the grounds and assist in the Maintenance Department as needed..

Full-time, Year-round position

  • Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Valid Alaska Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
  • Must be willing and able to work outside for extended period of time in all weather conditions, including rain, wind or snow.
  • Must be physically able to walk, bend, kneel, routinely lift and carry heavy items.
  • Must be energetic, flexible and outgoing.
  • Must not be afraid of physical work or getting dirty.
  • Must be able to work 40 hours per week plus overtime as needed.
  • Must be able to work outdoors as part of a group as well as independently.
  • Must be able to be supervised as well as able to supervise others.
  • Skilled and efficient at watering and knowing when watering is required.

Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:

  • Work directly with the Head Gardener following instructions as given.
  • Anticipate and foresee tasks which need completion each week, reporting them to Head Gardener and coordinating with supervisor to make sure they are accomplished.
  • Perform various greenhouse tasks such as, transplanting seedlings, taking vegetative cuttings, watering, weeding and cleaning up all areas.
  • Monitor all growing areas for pests as part of an integrated pest management system.
  • Carry out summer crew supervision under the direction of the Head Gardener.
  • Watering both in greenhouse and outdoors.  Some weekends are required during the entire season. You will be responsible for keeping plants alive during weekend shifts!
  • Assist Head Gardener in supporting and enforcing all Alaska State Fair rules.
  • Monitor and maintain equipment – greenhouses, tools (mower, weed whip, etc), pickups, fences, etc.
  • Ensure the safety of personnel and equipment at all times.
  • Actively assist in installation and maintenance of Fair produced winter events.
  • Assist year-round maintenance technicians in the shop when needed from December through February.
  • Perform light construction projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Runner

Fair-time position

Duties include distributing daily schedules and programs daily throughout the Fair, running errands to different parts of the fairgrounds and community, and assisting with clerical assignments including answering the switchboard as needed.  Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds, and must have a valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record.  Minimum age 18.
