State why you wish to serve on the Board of Directors.
I wish to serve on the Alaska State Fair Board of Directors because it is an iconic part of Alaska’s agricultural heritage. I have extensive experience working with the New York State Fair, the Kansas State Fair, the Alaska State Fair and numerous county fairs. I believe these experiences could provide valuable insight for continuing to expand the education and fun to be found at the Alaska State Fair. I would also like to help the fair become an even greater destination event for those beyond the Valley and Anchorage.
Summarize employment experience; include work with budgets and supervisory duties.
I have nearly 20 years as a Cooperative Extension Service faculty member in agriculture and 4-H. I have served at Cornell University, Kansas State University, University of Texas at San Antonio and, now, the University of Alaska Fairbanks. In these positions I have been responsible for managing employees, students and volunteers. I have experience managing multi-million dollar budgets and grant writing activities.
List any volunteer activities, including board experience.
Have served as President and board member of the Palmer Kiwanis Club. I am a volunteer member of the Red Cross for the Mat-Su Valley. I am a former Scoutmaster and Scouting volunteer. I just recently returned from serving as a volunteer in Haiti rebuilding a school as part of the earthquake disaster recovery effort.
How long have you been a member of the Alaska State Fair?
Since May 31, 2011
How have you participated in the Fair in the past?
I have had life-long association with county and state fairs… first as a youth in 4-H and FFA livestock competitions and then professionally as an extension agent. For me, the fair represents the culmination of many months of hard work in preparing an exhibit. Whether you get a Grand Champion Ribbon or no ribbon, the fair itself, with its rides, food, music and displays is the reward.

What is your vision for the Fair, and do you have specific goals?
My vision for the fair is for it to continue to expand being the flagship of agricultural education in Alaska. Through a variety of experiences including competitions, shows, displays and vendors, it should connect fairgoers with the importance of Alaska’s unique agricultural heritage and future.
