State why you wish to serve on the Board of Directors.

To see continuing improvements to the Fair’s infrastructure and improve our Fairgoers’ experience.  I’ve worked very hard with other Directors to prioritize and find funding to upgrade the aging systems and buildings.  One of the most important upgrades and ONE of the more expensive projects is the sewer system.  Until this is completed, we won’t even be able to build another bathroom.  To achieve what was only a dream five years ago is now becoming a reality.

Summarize employment experience; include work with budgets and supervisory duties.

My experience is that of a successful, self-employed businessman consisting of ownership of several companies, all of which were successful and I later sold.  As the owner, I was responsible for all financial aspects of these businesses with a range of $250,000 to over five million in annual sales.  My businesses were successful — I never had to close a business due to failure, or filed for bankruptcy.  I have practical fiscal responsibility in the operation of any business my name has been associated with.  My present experience serving as chair and on many committees including the Finance Committee reflects this trait.

List any volunteer activities, including board experience.

I served 6 years on the BOD of the Alaska State Fair, 5 years as the President.  I am currently serving as the State Representative of NICA; I am the founder and was chief fundraiser for the “Christmas in the Park” celebration for many years.  The event provided the less fortunate an all-day celebration with entertainment, food and Christmas gifts from Santa to the local children.

How long have you been a member of the Alaska State Fair?

Life member since 2007 and Annual member since 2004.

How have you participated in the Fair in the past?

I have partnered since 1988 with Fairs and Festivals statewide as a concessionaire and I pride myself in setting high standards.  This is my business —it means that I have intimate participation at the fair having spent over 380 days and nights on the fairgrounds.  In addition to that, the largest participation I have with the Fair is serving as President.  All directors who serve on this Board must commit to a certain amount of time to prepare for and attend meetings, the Fair itself and some of the interim events.  In addition, as President, I have always arranged my schedule to be available to support Fair policies at public meetings, dedications and award ceremonies and with various officials.

Summarize what you value most about the Fair. State your specific areas of  interest.

Passion for the tradition that brings Alaskans from near and far together in celebration of the Alaskan autumn, the last chance to enjoy events outside, an opportunity to showcase and view Alaska world record agricultural achievements; watching people from all over the state participate in the educational, entertainment and youth programs of all types which are held in this beautiful location.  Community non-profits and local organizations that volunteer their members’ time to generate monies for their cause, which in turn benefits the community as a whole. Our entertainment programs, the value of increased visibility of free entertainment and obtaining the best talent possibly available to the Borealis Theater excites me.  Specific areas of interest will remain continuing to improve the Fair’s failing infrastructure and also at the head of my list is to excite, educate and entertain our patrons while providing true value.

What is your vision for the Fair, and do you have specific goals?

As stated in 2006 my vision was to see the Fair become a greater asset to the community, the populace of our state, and our membership through extended development and upgrades.   Some of this infrastructure vision has seen fruition but so much more remains—yet is within our grasp.  Today, specifically, I want to see the installation of a new sewer system, repairing the Farm Exhibits building roof, and firmly cementing a plan for future infrastructure improvements.

Alaska State Fair’s Mission and Vision statement best describes my goals.  I hope in assisting to: “Produce a traditional state fair which educates and entertains fairgoers; provides stable finances through good business practices, statewide outreach, partnerships and hosting a variety of community, cultural and business events.”

I am determined if I am elected to the Board, to continue working to ensure that our vision statement, “Alaska State Fair, Inc. provides a center for the statewide community to gather in a dynamic and safe atmosphere through the year” will be fulfilled with the crucial infrastructure upgrades.
