Congratulations to Craig Stark of Anchorage, who won the Cabbage Classic Lottery at the 2012 Alaska State Fair! The Cabbage Classic, presented by the Palmer Rotary with support from the Fair, gave fairgoers the chance to guess the weight of the winning cabbage in this year’s Giant Cabbage Weigh-Off. Read more about the Cabbage Classic in our previous blog post.
The Palmer Rotary presented a check for just over $500 to Craig at its recent meeting. The remaining proceeds will be split equally between the Palmer Rotary and the Fair, and will go to support the organizations’ scholarship programs.
Mike Chmielewski, Palmer Rotary president, says the first year of the Cabbage Classic was a success on several levels – from the Palmer Rotarians enthusiastically volunteering to staff the ticket booth, to receiving an honorable mention in the Fair booth judging, to serving as a display point for Pat Garley’s magnificent metal cabbage artwork.
“Getting the lottery up and running this year took an incredible amount of work and cooperation of many Palmer Rotarians with the Alaska State Fair staff. From the beginning we all agreed that this event provided a win, win, win, win opportunity for the lottery winner, the community of cabbage growers, the Alaska State Fair and ultimately the scholarship recipients,” he says.
The lottery was purposefully kept small this year in order to “test all aspects before expanding,” Mike says. With year one successfully complete, “We hope to evolve the event next year and look forward to working with the Fair to continue the lottery into the future.”
