Fair Seeks Nominations for Salute to Alaskan Heroes Awards
The Alaska State Fair is seeking nominations for the Salute to Alaskan Heroes awards, which honor the accomplishments, challenges and successes of those who have worked tirelessly to preserve, protect and help the citizens of Alaska. The awards are sponsored by Microcom Communications Solutions.
“Every day, citizens of Alaska serve, protect and work hard to make a difference for their friends, neighbors and even complete strangers. The Alaska State Fair would like to pay tribute to these heroes on the opening day of the Fair in a Salute to Alaskan Heroes,” said Ray Ritari, Fair general manager.
Award nominations are accepted in the following categories (please note that nominees must live in Alaska):
- Active Military: An act of heroism by an active member of the armed services, reserves or National Guard.
- Retired Military: An act of heroism by a retired member of the armed services, reserves or National Guard.
- Wounded Warrior: An act of heroism or survival by a wounded member of the armed services, reserves or National Guard.
- Veteran of War: An act of heroism by a veteran of war, whether on the battlefield or in civilian life.
- Emergency Services: An act of heroism by an individual trained to respond to an emergency.
- Public Safety: An act of heroism by an individual trained to respond as a part of their job.
- Alaska Native: An act of heroism by an individual who is an Alaska Native.
- Volunteer: An individual whose actions demonstrate a dedicated commitment to volunteering and helping their community.
- Cultural: An individual whose actions demonstrate a dedicated commitment to helping their culture and people.
- Pioneer: An individual who has been in Alaska 50+ years and whose actions demonstrate a dedicated commitment to helping their community.
- Youth: An individual under 21 whose actions demonstrate a dedicated commitment to helping their community.
- Everyday Hero: Someone who has made a difference by doing what needed to be done to help an individual or a group.
Nomination forms are available now at alaskastatefair.org and are due by 4 p.m. on August 3, 2009. Forms may be completed online, or may be downloaded and emailed to events@alaskastatefair.org, faxed to 907-746-7154, or mailed to Salute to Alaskan Heroes, Alaska State Fair, 2075 Glenn Hwy., Palmer, Alaska 99645.
A total of 12 recipients, who will be chosen by an independent selection committee, will be honored at the Salute to Alaskan Heroes award ceremony on the opening day of the Fair, August 27, 2009, at 6 p.m. at the Colony Stage. Both the recipient and the nominator will receive free admission to the opening day of the Fair.
