enny Rogers has drawn fans across the rock, pop, soul and country genres with his sweetly raspy vocals featured on hits such as “Lady,” “Ruby Don’t Take Your Love to Town,” “The Gambler,” “She Believes in Me,” “Islands in the Stream,” “We’ve Got Tonight” and “Buy Me a Rose.”
With more than 30 albums in his discography, dozens of hits, and awards ranging from the 1977 Academy of Country Music Awards top male vocalist, to the 1986 USA Today favorite singer of all time, to the 2007 CMT Music Awards album of the year, Rogers has firmly established himself as a living legend.
The Houston-born Rogers formed his first band while in high school in 1956. He later joined the Bobby Doyle Trio, then became a member of the New Christy Minstrels, and later formed The First Edition with several other members of the troupe. In 1974, Kenny Rogers and the First Edition disbanded and, impressed by the loyalty of country fans, Rogers looked to country.
Rogers’ solo career skyrocketed with the song “Lucille,” which topped the country chart, succeeded on the pop chart, was named single of the year by the Country Music Association and was certified gold. “The Gambler” later spawned a TV movie starring Rogers and started him on a second career as an actor. The multi-talented man has never stopped making music, though. In 1999, Rogers found himself back on the country chart with “The Greatest,” and his follow-up, “Buy Me a Rose,” hit No. 1. Rogers’ latest album, “50 Years,” is available now. |
