Alaskans are invited to show off their heritage or just their favorite flavor by creating their own Alaskan Picnic using various meats, Alaskan produce and an ethnic twist to make them unique. A panel of judges will decide the winners and award ribbons and prizes. The Grand Prize is a BRAND NEW GRILL!
Contestants may enter one or more of the divisions below. They are asked to provide enough to share with fairgoers if they want to enter the People’s Choice Contest. The People’s Choice winner will receive a $50 cash prize for each division.
1. Salad Vegetable or fruit Tasting & Judging Noon – 1 pm
2. Hot Dogs Includes sausages or brats Tasting & Judging 1 pm – 2 pm
3. Burgers Anything on a bun goes Tasting & Judging 2 pm – 3 pm

Grilled Side Dish: Any fruit or vegetable with or without dressing prepared on the grill. Should compliment a main entrée
Hot Dogs/Brats: Any commercially available product prepared on the grill with or without accompaniment.
Burger: Any commercially available product (meat or vegetable) prepared on the grill with or without accompaniment.
Dessert: Any items prepared on the grill to finish a meal.
Example: Grilled pound cake with grilled peaches and caramel sauce and pecans.People’s Choice: Make extra entries and enter them in the public tasting.
OFFICIAL RULES:
- To participate, entrants must complete and mail or bring entry form to: Events – Alaska State Fair, 2075 Glenn Hwy., Palmer, AK 99645 or fax to: 907-746-7154. Please include your entry fee. Checks are made payable to the Alaska State Fair. Deadline for entries is August 18, 2008. Late entries (postmarked after August 18) are accepted on a space available basis.
- The Grand Prize winner will receive a brand new grill, a trophy, and bragging rights! In each category, first prize wins $100; second prize wins $50 and third prize wins $25. People’s choice winners will receive a variety of prizes.
- Set up begins at 8:00 am and all entrants should arrive no later than 9:00 am. Vehicles are NOT ALLOWED on the fairgrounds after 9:00 am. Cooking begins at 10:00 am.
- Entrants may prepare a minimum of two entries in each category entered: one entry for judging and the remaining for public tasting.
- State of Alaska-DEC, Division of Environmental Health Field Directive No. 2942 shall be supplied to all entrants and must be followed.
- Upon arrival, food will be checked (in original package, unopened). Meat must be USDA approved. Fresh vegetables, pots, pans, utensils, chopping boards, etc.., should be in sanitary conditions. Chopping boards must be free from deep gouges or cracks.
- No running water is available close to the site. Only hand washing stations will be available.
- Entrants must have a spray bottle with a bleach/water solution of 50 ppm in addition to their cooking equipment.
- All fresh ingredients must be cooked on site; no precooked or treated fresh ingredients will be permitted.
- NO ELECTRICITY IS AVAILABLE, entrants must supply their own propane grills.
- Cooking temperatures must reach 165 degrees Fahrenheit or higher for at least 15 seconds. Cooks must use disposable utensils to taste their grilling entries.
- The decisions of the judges shall be final regarding all contest issues. There shall not be any liability to the Alaska State Fair or any other sponsor for any entry, decision, or award which is or may be deemed irregular in any manner.
- All taxes are the responsibility of the winner.
- Everyone is eligible.
- Alcoholic beverages are prohibited from being consumed or dispensed in the Events Tent. Entrants found in violation of this rule will be disqualified.
Helpful Hints
Use a “Coleman-type” propane stove.
Bring everything you need including paper towels, plastic spoons, can opener and plenty of water.
A table and two chairs will be provided.
A good cooler can do double duty as a footrest!
You will have a 10’ x 8’ cooking space.
