Youth Straw Poll Results

With the upcoming presidential election, The League of Women Voters of Anchorage has put forth another effort to enlist lifelong voters into the world of politics with Youth Vote 2008, a student run nonpartisan program that allows students to get an inside look on what to expect when they vote at age eighteen.

Three of the programs promoters stated that they’re trying to “enlist lifelong voters in teenagers,” and that he program is open to all Anchorage school district students, as well as Eagle River and Chugiak schools that wish to participate. All of the youth leaders chosen to participate will hold a debate for the implementation of a congressional candidate that will be broadcast on the Channel 2 news.
The League of Women Voters of Anchorage had a presence at the 2008 Alaska State Fair on Wells Fargo Youth Day, and conducted a straw poll of youth with questions based on the economy, education, environment, civil rights, as well as corruption.

Thirty youth participated in this straw poll and following are the results, listed in order of most important to least:

  • Corruption
  • Civil Rights
  • Environment
  • Economy
  • Education

Ten new voters were also registered that day.
